This Cavetone sound is a 1970s, Shure 548, Unidyne IV. Aside from its beautiful high modernism design and brushed nickel exterior, it is the epitome of a sleeper microphone. It features a highly usable cardioid pattern that rejects unwanted sounds, has beautiful crispness in the top end, and a captures a good deal of body in the mids. It also plays well with most preamps and most sources. If we had to choose between a 548 and an SM57, we’d pick the 548 ninety percent of the time.
